Institute of Biotechnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences announces an open position:

Junior/medior database backend programmer

About the role

We are seeking a programmer with experience in database development. In this role, you will be responsible for development of backend of database for molecular biophysics raw data under the Centre of Molecular Structure of IBT. You will collaborate and communicate with the database development team at IBT, in CESNET, our external partner, and occasionally across the European community of researchers in the field of molecular biophysics. You will be responsible to the executive body of the database.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of database backend: communication with the database team, developing algorithms, programming, testing
  • Code documentation: keeping and updating rich internal and external documentation of the code development
  • Database maintenance: Assistance in upgrades and updates of database, especially from the backend point of view, problem solving
  • Liaising with front end development: connecting the backend development with front end requirements

Desired skills and experience

  • Proven experience in programming: You have realized/participated in a project as a programmer
  • Strong skills in Python (especially Flask applications): You can provide examples of your coding results
  • Knowledge of using Git and GitHub for version control
  • Independence and teamwork: Ability to work with minimal supervision and to form n efficient team with database staff, documented previous teamwork experience
  • Creative problem solving: Ability to think critically and propose innovative, out-of-the-box solutions
  • Language proficiency: English at least at B2 level in speaking, reading, and writing
  • Digital tools proficiency

Attitude and drive

  • Motivation and willingness to learn
  • Integrity and reliability: Communicates honestly and strives for fairness, even in difficult situations
  • Collaborative and inclusive: Skilled at engaging diverse stakeholders in solution-finding and open to constructive feedback

Advantageous programming skills:

  • Knowledge of using GitHub actions for CI/CD
  • Basic knowledge of REST APIs
  • Basic knowledge of Docker
  • Basic knowledge of Opensearch/ElasticSearch

Start date: preferably immediately upon agreement

Capacity: part-time role with 40-60% working hours

The Centre of Molecular Structure (part of the Czech Infrastructure for Integrative Structural Biology, https://www.ciisb.org/ and of the European infrastructure Instruct-ERIC, https://instruct-eric.eu/) participates in the EU Horizon 2020 project MOSBRI (https://www.mosbri.eu/) focused on provision of open access to biophysical techniques across Europe with a strong accent on definition of data standards and archival of biophysical data and in the NRP project focused a unified approach to definitions of national repositories for scientific data.

Location

IBT is located in the BIOCEV center in Vestec, Prague-west, ~40 minutes from the city center by public transport.
