Biostatistician position announcement

The new Bioinformatics department at Institute of Botany CAS (IBOT) (Průhonice, Czech Republic) has an opening for a new biostatistician/bioinformatician (either V1 research assistant or V4 associate scientist according to the candidate’s profile) position beginning in January 2020. The position is funded for 1 year with option for extension.

Our research focuses on the computational analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data generated by next-generation sequencing platforms from non-model plant species in order to address questions related to genome biology and population genomics.

Our team follows its independent lines of research, but also develops close collaborations with other IBOT and international experts on data intensive projects.

We are interested in a candidate familiar with inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches in phylogenetics, population genetics and ecology. The position also involves ad hoc supervision and the opportunity for participation in the development of a new scientific department. The successful candidate will also have opportunity to develop their own research ideas as they fit within the general research interests of our department.

Qualifications:

The qualified applicant will have a Master degree or PhD in biostatistics, bioinformatics, machine learning, computer science, or botany. A strong background in statistics is essential. The candidate is required to have practical knowledge of next generation data processing in genomics and transcriptomics. The applicant should have experience with Linux/Unix, programming Python and R, high-performance computing frameworks and an interest in machine learning and distributed data processing frameworks (Hadoop, Apache Spark) and Scala programming.

We are particularly interested in candidates familiar with recent advances in gene flow research in macroevolution (polyploid and hybrid speciation) and microevolution (cross species hybridization and population gene flow). Previous experience with relevant models and methods is desirable. We seek a candidate with communication skills, ability to work independently as well as in a team and fluency in English. Personal suitability will be an important consideration.

Place of work: Průhonice near Prague.
