The dean of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, invites applications for job vacancy with a deadline for applications May 31, 2026

The Department of History is seeking a scholar (assistant professor/research fellow holding a Ph.D., or associate professor/professor) with a long-standing focus on the political, social, economic, or cultural history of the 19th century, not exclusively in the Czech lands, but at least within the broader context of Central and Eastern Europe, with an insight into key phenomena in European and global history and/or the field of international relations of this period.

The position is advertised as a full-time position (1.0 FTE), with the possibility of a reduced workload in the range of at least 0.5 FTE (subject to agreement with the selected candidate/selected female candidate).

If the career development plan is required, it must aim to commence the habilitation procedure (procedure for the granting of associate professorship) no later than nine years after the expected beginning of employment.

Qualifications

Assistant Professor (PhD) or Associate Professor/Professor, with a publication record demonstrating independent research activity in the field of history and teaching experience (teaching history or related fields at a university). The applicant must be able to teach in Czech and have a command of English (both spoken and written, at a level necessary for current academic operations); knowledge of at least one more language is desirable. International experience is an advantage. If a candidate holding the title of associate professor or professor is hired, he/she will be placed in the corresponding salary grade.

Expertise

  • An expert in 19th-century history, at least within the Central European context, and ideally within a broader European or global context.
