Academic position at the Department of Design and Furniture, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology

Research area:

  • furniture design, graphic design, and wooden composite materials with an emphasis on connecting creative design processes and technical-technological principles of modern furniture production
  • innovative approaches in design and visual communication, including the use of graphic methods in the design of furniture and interior elements
  • development, optimization, and testing of furniture structures and materials, especially wooden and composite systems
  • investigation of the physical-mechanical and aesthetic properties of materials in the context of contemporary design
  • application of digital technologies (3D modeling, visualization, prototyping) in research and design practice
  • sustainability, ecodesign, and circular approaches in the furniture industry
  • integration of graphic design into the process of designing, presenting, and communicating design solutions

The Department of Design and Furniture at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Mendel University in Brno, is a leading Czech academic institution focused on research, development, and innovation in the field of furniture, interior design, and wooden composite materials. The department’s team connects design, construction, material engineering, and modern manufacturing technologies, concentrating on the entire lifecycle of furniture—from design through production to sustainability and the circular economy. The department has long been involved in solving national and international research projects (TA CR, OP JAK, PROŽk, GAČR) and collaborates with industrial enterprises and other research organizations. The workplace has modern laboratories for testing structures and materials, prototyping, and digital manufacturing. The team consists of academic staff, technicians, designers, and doctoral students working in an interdisciplinary environment. The department offers candidates a creative environment, support for professional development, and the opportunity to realize or develop their own research directions closely linked to practice.

What will your job entail?

  • teaching and supervising students in the Graphic Design Studio, preparing materials for teaching and guiding semester projects
  • conducting classes in both Czech and English
  • consulting, supervising, and reviewing seminar and bachelor theses
  • participating in the department’s research and development activities in design, construction, and furniture
  • production technologies, possibly in material engineering
  • conducting experiments, testing, collecting data, and analyzing results within ongoing projects and research tasks
  • collaborating on the creation of professional and scientific outputs (studies, articles, project reports, presentations)
  • cooperating with team members, external experts, and industrial partners
  • participating in solving projects and professional assignments

What do we expect from you?

  • University degree at the master’s level in graphic design, furniture design, or related fields
  • active knowledge of Czech and English in both spoken and written forms, enabling scientific communication, teaching, writing texts, and presenting results
  • experience with solving or participating in research and application projects, possibly collaboration with industrial practice
  • orientation in the field, ability for professional work
  • predispositions for scientific-research activities
  • publishing activity
  • predispositions for pedagogical and creative activities, ability to lead and motivate students to engage in research
  • ability to work both in a team and independently, responsibility, initiative, and interest in long-term
  • professional development within the Department of Design and Furniture

What additional qualities would we appreciate?

  • completed or ongoing Ph.D. studies in the field
  • experience with teaching, supervising students, or participating in studio teaching in design or visual communication
  • knowledge of advanced graphic and visualization tools (Adobe CC, Blender, Rhinoceros, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • experience in graphic design, visual identity design, or creating presentations and portfolios
  • experience with physical-mechanical testing of materials, laboratory measurements, or prototyping of furniture structures
  • knowledge of sustainability, ecodesign, and circular economy principles in the context of the furniture industry
  • involvement in international projects or foreign research or professional experience
  • a creative approach, aesthetic sensitivity, and ability to connect artistic, technical, and research perspectives
