About the Workplace
Masaryk University is modern, dynamic and the most attractive university in the Czech Republic with ten faculties, more than 6500 staff and 33 000 students, a wide range of research areas and a strong international position. We are the largest academic employer in the South Moravian Region.

Faculty of Science MU, a holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission, is a research-oriented faculty, offering university education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree programs) closely linked to both primary and applied research and high school teaching of the following sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth sciences. We are the most productive scientific unit of the Masaryk University generating around 40 % of MU research results.

The National Centre for Biomolecular Research (NCBR) is a department at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno. Our research centre is located in the modern premises of the University Campus Bohunice, with the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC) and the Faculty of Medicine. This unique synergy and state-of-the-art equipment allows us to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of bio-omics and structural biology. Our research integrates experimental techniques with computer simulations and bioinformatic analyses. At the Centre, we support talented students at all levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral), including mentoring secondary school students in Students` Professional Activity (SPA) projects.

Description

We are offering a PhD fellowship in Biomedical Sciences or Biomolecular chemistry at the Department of Biology or NCBR at Masaryk University. The candidate will join the Laboratory of Recombination and DNA Repair, which is devoted to fundamental studies in processing of stalled replication forks and how this process contributes to genome instability and disease development. Examples of the recently studied problems in our lab include (1) role of homologous recombination proteins in processing stalled replication forks, (2) role of phase separation in genome maintenance, (3) characterisation of Rothmund-Thomson helicase, (4) role of G4 structures in genome stability, and (5) identification and optimisation of novel nuclease inhibitors for improved therapy. For more details, see: https://www2.med.muni.cz/lord/ or contact Lumir Krejci: lkrejci@chemi.muni.cz

The PhD fellowship is fully funded through a combination of EU-based and national research grants to ensure financial support throughout the studies. Selected candidate will receive excellent research training in biochemistry, biophysics, and cellular, molecular, and structural biology, broaden their education through graduate-level courses, and participate at conferences and in interdisciplinary projects with opportunities for short-term research stays outside Masaryk University. The gained expertise will allow the Ph.D. candidates to be highly competitive in their next career steps.

Offered Conditions

  • Comprehensive training in biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular, cellular and structural biology
  • Graduate-level courses in either Biomedical Sciences or Biomolecular Chemistry
  • Excellent research equipment including SwitchSENCE, AFM, Stopped-flow, MST, BLI instruments
  • Stable financial support throughout the Ph.D. studies
  • Financial awards for outstanding publications and performance-based bonuses
  • Support for international mobility and attendance at conferences

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A M. Sc. degree in or similar field
  • The applicant is also expected to demonstrate essential training in a range of molecular biology techniques relevant to basic research
  • Highly motivated, well-organised, and passionate students dedicated to completing their Ph.D. studies
  • Very good communication skills (oral and written) in English

How to Apply
Please send your curriculum vitae and a cover letter with a concise summary of your previous research activities to: lkrejci@chemi.muni.cz

Selection Process
Received applications will be continuously reviewed and carefully considered. Shortlisted applicants meeting the requirements will be invited to an interview.

Please note that your application does not substitute an official admission process to Ph.D. studies at SCI MUNI. Details including discussion about the research topic, required documentation or formalities will be a subject of the interview with successful candidates. Only upon the informal pre-agreement with potential future supervisor, a formal application for PhD studies at Faculty of Science, Masaryk University can be submitted.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
