WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a Researcher II position (roughly equivalent to a postdoc) to join the Department of Romance languages and literatures with a focus on the development of second or additional language structures (at the phonological and/or morphosyntactic level) by adults. The successful candidate will work within a research project hosted at Masaryk University and investigated jointly with the Charles University in Prague and the Czech Academy of Sciences (PI Pavel Caha). The specific research topic within the project is the acquisition of additional language(s) – in particular, Romance languages – by adults in migration contexts. The postdoc will work on this topic in collaboration with Egle Mocciaro.

 

MAIN JOB CONTENT

Framework

  • Independent performance of specialised research with a focus on analysis of adults’ oral production in a second language acquisition (phonology and/or morphosyntax).
  • Work within a research group.
  • Optimisation of procedures and methods of investigation.
  • Active publication activity (including in indexed journals, ideally Q1), both individual and in collaboration with others in the team.
  • Searching for grants, writing and submitting grant applications.
  • Contribution to sub-task “Research on Migrant Language” within research project “A lifetime with language: the nature and ontogeny of linguistic communication” (CZ.02.01.01/00/23_025/0008726, co-funded by the European Union)
  • The content of the research activity:
    • Oral data collection and processing.
    • Second or additional language’s structures analysis (phonological phenomena and/or morphosyntax).

Other

  • Participation in ensuring operational and administrative activities related to the position according to the instructions of the department head and administrative team.

WE REQUEST

Professional education, qualifications and experience

  • Ph.D. – Doctoral Degree Programme in Linguistics or Second Language Acquisition is required.
  • Focus on phonology and/or morphosyntax is an advantage.
  • Experience in usage-based methodologies is an advantage.

 

Length of experience required

  • Professional experience in the field (e.g. post doc) is not required.
  • Prior work on the research topic is an advantage.

Language skills

  • Knowledge of English language at B2/C1 level.
  • Knowledge of Czech is not required.

Requirements related to job content

  • A researcher who has obtained their Ph.D. (or equivalent, ISCED level 8) no more than 7 years ago (from the date of dissertation defence). This period may be extended for maternity and parental leave, long-term illness (more than 90 days), care for a family member (more than 90 days), pre-attestation preparation, or military service.
  • At least one scholarly publication in the last 3 years listed in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science or Scopus database, and of the type “article,” “book,” “book chapter,” “letter,” or “review” (as of the date of selection). The applicant must be the main author of at least one publication (depending on field-specific standards, this may be the first author, corresponding author, reprint author, or the role may be specified in the article text).
  • Ability to conduct independent scientific research.
  • Ability to collaborate on complex scientific, research, and development tasks within a research team.
  • Ability to apply basic principles of project management.
  • Ability to clearly formulate research results.
  • Ability to present research results.
  • Diligence, responsibility, reliability, openness to change, team spirit, patience, consideration, empathy, and friendliness when working and dealing with people & self-reflection.

The advantage is

Experience in research outside the Czech Republic with at least a 0.5 FTE, or Ph.D. studies abroad is an advantage. Czech citizens are not excluded.
