Offer Description

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral candidate to join the Open Mechanics Group at Czech Technical University (CTU) to advance solution techniques in structural topology optimization. The position is embedded in the Open Mechanics group led by Jan Zeman, and the candidate will collaborate with Marek Tyburec (Czech Technical University in Prague).

Within this project, the candidate will develop techniques and tools for solving selected topology optimization problems to certified global optimality. The idea of the project rests on exploiting the fact that topology optimization problems can be formulated as a minimization of a polynomial function over a feasible set, generally nonconvex, described by an intersection of a finite number of polynomial inequalities. Recent results in mathematical optimization have shown that, in such cases, the moment-sum-of-squares (Lasserre) hierarchy of outer convexifications enables obtaining certified globally-optimal solutions.

The candidate will explore the application of these recent results in polynomial optimization to address specific topology optimization problems. The focus will be on evaluating the scalability of the proposed method, analyzing and exploiting the problem structure, and establishing convergence guarantees.

Moreover, in addition to the theoretical aspects of the project, we can provide access to conventional additive manufacturing and testing facilities. This would enable the candidate to not only develop innovative designs but also manufacture and validate them.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background and applied mathematics and experience in mathematical optimization.

Additional comments

Czech Technical University in Prague now offers a new fellowship program, the CTU Global Postdoc Fellowship. This new and attractive two-year fellowship program offers excellent researchers who have recently completed their Ph.D. the chance to continue their research career at CTU. Fellows receive a two-year fellowship and become members of a team led by a mentor. The fellowship primarily aims at external international scientists who are currently conducting research abroad, but national candidates are also eligible.
