Research Area: applied research in furniture construction, wood materials, and laminated wood composites focusing on 3D shaping, optimization of technological parameters, material efficiency, experimental verification, and knowledge transfer to industrial practice

The Department of Design and Furniture at Mendel University in Brno is one of the leading institutions in the field of research, development, and innovation in furniture making, interior design, and wood processing. It has long-term connections between academic research and industrial practice and collaborates with both Czech and foreign companies on projects focused on manufacturing digitization, eco-design, circular economy, and development of new materials and construction solutions. The research team comprises experts in furniture construction, CAD/CAM technologies, ergonomics, and environmental product assessment (LCA/LCC) and actively transfers research results to the business sector.

The position of Knowledge Transfer Assistant focusing on 3D shaping of wood composites in furniture making is created in collaboration with FORM, spol. s r.o. and MENDELU as part of the program OP TAK – Partnership for Knowledge Transfer. The Assistant will join an interdisciplinary team working on a project aimed at implementing 3D shaping technology for laminated wood composites into FORM, spol. s r.o.’s practices. The goal is to transfer know-how from the academic environment to production and utilize technology enabling more effective production of complexly shaped wood elements with reduced material waste and broader design possibilities.

The position offers an opportunity to participate in applied research, collaborate with an industrial partner, and gain experience at the intersection of innovation, development, and real production practice.

What will your job responsibilities be?

  • Coordination of knowledge transfer between the Department of Design and Furniture at MENDELU and FORM, spol. s r.o.
  • Collaboration on verifying and introducing 3D shaping technology for laminated wood composites into production practice
  • Preparation of materials for experimental activities, documentation of testing processes, and basic evaluation of results
    Working with professional information, technical documentation, and methodological materials
  • Communication with team members, participation in meetings, and preparation of ongoing project outputs
  • Support in processing professional texts, presentations, and materials for project reports

What do we expect from you?

  • Ongoing master’s or doctoral study, or completed higher education in a field focused on forestry, furniture making, materials engineering, design, material processing technology, or a related technical field
  • Very good knowledge of the Czech language
  • Interest in applied research, innovation, and knowledge transfer to industrial practice
  • Ability to work with professional information and technical documentation
  • Good communication and organizational skills, independence as well as teamwork

What research experience do we require?

Previous research experience is not a condition. Participation in student, research, or applied projects or experience gained from processing final theses is an advantage.

What additional skills will be appreciated?

  • Familiarity with furniture design, wood materials, composites or manufacturing technologies
  • Basic knowledge of CAD/3D modeling tools or a desire to further develop in this area
  • Experience with student, research, or applied projects, experimental work, or data evaluation
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office and English for working with professional texts
  • Proactive approach, reliability, creative thinking, and willingness to learn new things
  • Driver’s license class B is an advantage
