About the Position 
HiLASE Centre is seeking a Junior Researcher to join our interdisciplinary team within the ATLAS (Advanced Technologies for Laser Applications in Space) research project. The successful candidate will contribute to pioneering research in laser-matter interaction, with an emphasis on laser ablation, propulsion, mining and related high-power laser applications and experiments.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of photonics research in a supportive and innovative environment, under the guidance of leading scientists in the field.

What You Will Do:
As a Junior Researcher, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and contributing to research objectives, both independently and as part of the broader team.
  • Planning and managing your own workload and research activities in alignment with the objectives of the ATLAS project.
  • Conducting high-quality individual and collaborative research in laser-matter interaction, including method development.
  • Disseminating research outcomes via peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Building and maintaining professional networks to identify funding opportunities and share research insights.
  • Supporting departmental teaching efforts through integration of research findings and supervising student projects.
  • Participating in knowledge exchange initiatives, especially with industry and policy stakeholders.
  • Contributing to administrative duties and engaging in ongoing professional development.

We Are Looking for Someone with the following skills and competencies: 
Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field.
  • Ability to conduct independent research, prepare proposals, and effectively plan and organise tasks.
  • Strong teamwork capabilities, motivation, openness to learn new things, and willingness to collaborate across disciplines are key.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Motivation and interest in advanced laser space applications.

Demonstrated interest or initial experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred:

  • Laser-matter interaction
  • Laser ablation
  • Laser mining
  • Laser propulsion
  • High power/high intensity lasers

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • General knowledge of laser systems and space safety.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards
  • Basic knowledge of mechanics
  • Basic knowledge of electronics
  • Experience with CAD software
