The University of Chemistry and Technology Prague (UCT) seeks to appoint a highly motivated early-career researcher in polymer synthesis for a prestigious position: Junior Professor in Polymer Science. The candidate will be expected to establish an excellent research group at UCT and to initiate novel national and international projects. As a faculty member, the candidate is further expected to participate in teaching activities, including the supervision of students. The position of Junior Professor in Polymer Science was established in collaboration with the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB). IOCB is traditionally active and successful in basic as well as translational research.

The candidate requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in Polymer Science or related field
  • Preferential expertise of candidate is in polymer synthesis with focus on chemical recycling, biodegradable polymers and efficient catalytic approaches
  • Ambitions and capabilities to start her/his independent research career as junior group leader
  • Strong publication record as reflected by international peer-reviewed papers in top journals
  • Research experience from abroad (post-doc) for minimum two years
  • The potential to successfully secure external funding through European and other international and national agency grants
  • Willingness to teach and develop Polymer Sciences courses of the Department of Polymers, previous teaching experience is appreciated
  • Ambition to grow professionally with the aim of pursuing habilitation/professorship

Position is offered by Department of Polymers founded in 1949 by world-renowned Czech chemist Otto Wichterle (1913-1918), best known for his invention of modern soft contact lenses based on synthetic poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) hydrogels- first  biomaterials designed for medicinal use and developed at UCT Prague in mid 1950s, later used in the technology of polymerization casting to produce soft contact lenses at Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Czech Academy of Sciences (IMC) in early 1960s. Wichterle was the first Head of the Department of Polymers at UCT Prague, one of the oldest and most comprehensive centres for polymer science training in Europe, the first president of  IUPAC Polymer division (1957), first director of IMC (1958), author of around 180 patents and 200 papers.
