The Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i. is a public research institution, focusing on basic and applied research in physics. The ambition of the Institute of Physics is to push forward the boundaries of knowledge and to conduct first-rate research in the fields of elementary particles, condensed matter physics, solid-state physics, optics, plasma physics, and laser physics.

We are currently opening a permanent scientific job position (full time-based in Prague, Czech Republic) for the head of the new research department. The new department is based on the existing FZU research groups active in the research of Materials for Nanosystems and Biointerfaces as well as Gas Sensors and Functional Nanomaterials. The department will have almost 20 employees and all experimental equipment needed for competitive research.

What will you do 

  • Manage and organizationally ensure scientific activities in the department
  • Represent the scientific department and promote its scientific results at both national and international levels
  • Engage in scientific work (publishing, supervise PhD students, lead projects, deal with commercialization of research results, popularization of science etc.)
  • Handle personnel activities associated with the management of the department
  • Create suitable working conditions and environment
  • Build the department’s identity in the scientific community at both national and international levels over the long term

What we expect

  • The applicant should have a Ph.D. degree in physics or in related specializations
  • Experience in leading academic scientific teams
  • Scientific career in the field of materials research of the physical properties of materials in the form of thin films and coatings
  • Expert knowledge and overview in the fields of preparation technology and properties of thin films and coatings based on diamond, magnetic properties of actinides, and materials for chemical sensors
  • Practical experience with methods for characterizing the structure and properties of materials in the form of thin films and coatings
  • Excellent HR management and communication skills with a good command of English – (knowledge of Czech language is an added value)
  • Excellent administrative skills (proven record of managing a research team is an added value)
  • Organizational skills
