Czech Academy of Sciences announces a competition for the position of Director of the Oriental Institute of the CAS
Requirements:
- full legal competence[1];
- clean criminal record pursuant to Section 17(4)(b) and (c) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll., on public research institutions, as amended;
- university education and scientific qualification in a field covered by the institute’s research activities;
- scientific activities in one of the main fields of the institute’s research activities;
- organisational abilities and managerial experience;
- active knowledge of English; active knowledge of Czech and additional language skills are an advantage;
- experience in managing grant-funded projects
- moral integrity;
- compliance with the conditions pursuant to Act No. 451/1991 Coll., stipulating additional requirements for holding certain positions in state bodies and organisations of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, as amended (this does not apply to applicants who are not citizens of the Czech Republic).
An institute director cannot be a member of managerial or supervisory bodies of legal entities performing business activities and cannot be involved in the business of legal entities active in the area that is the subject of the institute’s activities. The aforementioned restrictions do not apply to the management of own assets (Section 17(6) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.).
An institute director serves as director under an employment contract with a full-time workload (1.0), which is established by appointment; no other employment relationship between the institute and the director may be established. An institute director ensures that the total sum of all his or her positions with all employers complies with the ethical rules for scientific and research activities at the Czech Academy of Sciences.[1]
An institute director may participate in projects involving targeted funding or in the execution of contracts funded from extra-budgetary sources within the scope of their agreed workload, provided that this is necessary for the performance of the institute’s core activities and does not interfere with the fulfilment of their duties under applicable laws.
The OI director will be responsible for completing the renovation and relocating the institute to its new headquarters at Hybernská 8, Prague 1.
Expected term of office: from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2031
Approximate remuneration: Gross monthly salary of CZK 120,000 + annual performance-related bonus

- summary of work experience;
- list of main scientific works and publications;
- concept for the institute’s management and strategic direction, including its future development, not exceeding 10 pages;
- Criminal Record Certificate issued within the last 3 months[2];
- declaration of clear criminal record pursuant to Section 17(4)(c) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.1 and on work in the bodies of legal entities pursuant to Section 17(6) of Act No. 341/2005 Coll.[3]
Compliance with the conditions pursuant to Act No. 451/1991 Coll., is documented by a certificate pursuant to Section 4(1) and a declaration pursuant to Section 4(3), which a candidate submits with an application for the selection process or subsequently, without undue delay after the certificate is issued to them, but no later than the day of appointment to the position of institute director. The same submission methods as those for the delivery of an application for the selection process apply.[4]
