Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities or Computational Social Sciences

Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a full-time or part-time position as Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities or Computational Social Sciences (2+2 years, with the possibility of a tenure track) at the Institute for the Interregional Study of Constitutionalism (IISC).

Charles University is the leading university in Central Europe, boasting a nearly 700-year tradition and excellent international rankings, making it one of the most reputable and prestigious universities worldwide. The Faculty of Law, established in 1348 as one of the university’s four founding faculties, is now the largest accredited law faculty in the Czech Republic, with over 4,500 students.

We are seeking a candidate capable of using computational data analysis methods, particularly Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, and of applying these methods to research social media and to conduct content and discourse analysis. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team studying constitutionalism and collective identity.

The initial contract will be for two years. Upon a successful review, the candidate may receive a contract extension of up to two years, with a pathway to a permanent position.

Your Tasks

  1. Conduct research in social, political and legal sciences, with a focus on the digital public sphere, deliberative democracy, and identity politics.

  2. Use tools like text mining and machine learning to collect and analyze (social) media content, governmental documents, and legal texts (discourse analysis).

  3. Program social bots on social media platforms for research purposes.

  4. Design, oversee, and analyze a survey using statistical methods.

  5. Collaborate closely with the research team on the conduct of the research.

  6. Publish in leading academic journals.

  7. Present your results at major academic conferences in the field and contribute to the work of the IISC, including developing and submitting grant proposals.

Your Profile

  1. A Ph.D. degree in law, political science, philosophy, psychology, sociology, or a related social science or humanities field; or a Ph.D. in computer science (e.g., AI) or a related field such as computer or software engineering.

  2. Knowledge and experience with computational methods for Natural Language Processing (NLP), including text classification and analysis and Machine Learning.

  3. Expertise in a field of social and political sciences is an advantage.

  4. A solid track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  5. A team player with a high degree of autonomy.

  6. Proficiency in English.

  7. Willingness to reside in Prague throughout the contract.
