About the Workplace

Masaryk University is modern, dynamic and the most attractive university in the Czech Republic with ten faculties, more than 7 000 staff and 33 000 students, a wide range of research areas and a strong international position. We are the largest academic employer in the South Moravian Region.

Faculty of Science MU, a holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission, is a research-oriented faculty, offering university education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree programs) closely linked to both primary and applied research and high school teaching of the following sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth sciences. We are the most productive scientific unit of the Masaryk University generating around 40 % of MU research results.

Department of Plasma Physics and Technology (formerly the Institute of Physical Electronics) at the Faculty of Science of MU University provides courses and guarantees basic and applied research in the fields of plasma physics, plasma applications and nanotechnology. It has a tradition of more than 50 years. The CEPLANT Research and Development Centre for Plasma and Nanotechnology Surface Treatments was established in 2010 as part of the Institute of Physical Electronics and was funded by European Structural Funds and recognised as a Key Technology Centre (KET) by the European Union.

Job Description

Researcher II will work in the research group Plasma nanotechnologies and bioapplications (https://plasma.sci.muni.cz), which focuses on basic and applied research in the physics and chemistry of low-temperature plasma. The main activities of the group are the development of atmospheric plasma sources, their optimization, diagnostics of generated plasma, innovation, and industrial applications for surface treatment of materials such as nonwoven textiles, nanofibers, polymers, wood, metals, semiconductors, glass, etc., used in a wide range of industrial fields.

Researcher II will primarily focus on the development and study of composite materials. Its main tasks will include experimental research into composite materials with fiber reinforcement and their matrices; the implementation of plasma treatments, analysis of material properties, and data evaluation. The candidate will be expected to participate in ongoing projects focused on plasma treatment of reinforcing fibers, plasma functionalization, and the application of plasma technologies in industry, as well as to submit their own projects, including in collaboration with industry. Researcher II will participate in the preparation of publications and in the supervision of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students‘ theses.

  • Conducting experimental research on composite systems with fiber reinforcement and their matrices
  • Designing and implementing plasma treatment of various materials and textiles for surface functionalization
  • Evaluating the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of materials (e.g., measuring strength, adhesion)
  • Planning of research and experiments, including preparation and optimization of samples and processing conditions
  • Processing and analysis of obtained data, creation of reports, journal articles, presentation of results at international conferences
  • Active involvement in research projects, preparation of research projects, cooperation in student supervision and teaching

Key Duties:

  • PhD in plasma physics or material science
  • Experience abroad or in industry
  • Experience in experimental plasma physics
  • Experience with basic surface analysis techniques (SEM, FTIR, XPS, AFM)
  • Good communication skills (oral and written) in English
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • The candidate must be able to work independently on assigned tasks and formulate their solutions, collaborate with other members of the group and members of other research groups, and assist students in their research work
