In accordance with the The Competitive Hiring Process Code of Charles University, the Dean of the Faculty of Science of Charles University announces a competitive hiring process with a deadline for applications December 15, 2025

The Department of Social Geography and Regional Development, Faculty of Science, Charles University, is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher specialising in the intersections of urbanisation, migration, and environmental health (particularly WASH). The position will contribute to ongoing and planned research exploring how urbanisation processes, mobility dynamics, and essential services shape spatial inequalities and development pathways, with a focus on non-core urbanising regions and late-urbanising countries (e.g. India and/or Ethiopia). The position is offered for up to two years at 0.6 FTE, with the possibility of an equivalent shorter full-time arrangement. Extension or upgrading of the position may be possible depending on future project funding. The gross monthly salary, payable 12 times per year, is approximately CZK 61,000 for a full-time appointment (CZK 36,600 for 0.6 FTE). The postdoctoral researcher will be mentored by Professor Josef Novotný (josef.novotny@natur.cuni.cz)

Qualifications

We are seeking candidate with a PhD in geography, development studies, urban studies, environmental studies, or related disciplines. A proven record of quality research and publications in relevant fields is expected. Familiarity with spatial analysis, quantitative methods, and/or qualitative fieldwork will be considered an asset. Excellent written and spoken English is required, and knowledge of other languages relevant to the research is an advantage. The position is particularly suitable for researchers who obtained their PhD within the past six years and wish to strengthen their independent research profile and long-term funding prospects.
