The Faculty of Arts belongs among the largest and longest-established centers for area studies research and instruction in Central and Eastern Europe, covering all global regions in its research. By engaging in the ERA-AREAS project, the Faculty seeks to strengthen its area studies programs focused on non-European global regions and Eastern Europe. We invite applications from scholars within area studies whose research demonstrates strong regional expertise and a commitment to addressing globally significant issues through a social science lens. The ideal candidate will employ comparative methodologies and actively engage in disciplinary debates within area studies on critical current events from a comparative perspective. While the specific disciplinary focus of the applicants is secondary (gravitating towards the loosely defined core of sociology, political science, economics, contemporary history or anthropology), the researcher is expected to engage in research of the causes and consequences of contemporary crises in Asia which include, in particular, political crises, economic shocks, coups, democratic breakdowns, social protests, early government terminations, threats to democracies,  and outbursts of political violence.

Essential criteria 

• Proven experience with approaches that compare contexts within or across global regions, including the ability to combine deep contextual knowledge of specific global regions with comparative methods (qualitative, quantitative, computational or mixed methods) to identify causal linkages,
• Demonstrated capacity to apply social science research methods to area studies, moving beyond traditional linguistic-cultural approaches while avoiding purely universalist, theory-driven models of explanation,
• A completed Ph.D. (or an internationally recognized equivalent) in a relevant social science discipline, obtained no more than five years prior to the application deadline (excluding eligible career breaks such as parental leave, military service, serious illness, or other legally recognized interruptions). If the Ph.D. is not completed by the application deadline (September 14, 2026) but is expected to be finished by the start date (April 1, 2027), the candidate must provide a confirmation letter from their supervisor stating that the Ph.D. will be completed no later than April 1, 2027.

Your Responsibilities 

• The postdoctoral researchers will form part of a multidisciplinary and cross-regional research group at the Center for Multidisciplinary Area Studies guided by a single overarching analytic theme, composed of other newly hired postdoctoral researchers and current researchers at the Faculty Arts area studies departments,
• Contribute to the scientific goal of the project by analyzing the causes and consequences of critical current events from a methodologically rigorous and comparative perspective,
• Limited teaching duties (approximately 1 course per semester for MA and PhD students within the research interest of the post holder),
• Conduct innovative and impactful research that pushes the boundaries of the field, collaborating with students and colleagues to cultivate a vibrant research environment,
• Maintain a strong and consistent publication output in leading international publication outlets (peer – reviewed journals, book publishers),
• Secure external research funding, engage in further collaborative projects, develop and submit competitive grant applications,
• Ensure practical relevance and societal impact of the research by contributing to policy development, engage proactively with non-academic audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and media outlets, ensuring research is accessible and socially relevant,

Research Area: Issues of Weeds and Their Regulation

The Department of Agrosystems and Bioclimatology focuses on research and education in various agricultural management systems – integrated, precision, and ecological. The department conducts comprehensive long-term field experiments on its experimental plots, addressing agrotechnical measures such as soil cultivation, establishment and maintenance of crops, crop rotation, cover crops, and weed control. Numerous experiments focus on researching the impacts and adaptation measures related to climate change and the increasing occurrence of meteorological extremes.

The Department of History of State and Law is a unit of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University that carries out educational and scientific research activities in the field of legal history and Roman law. In terms of teaching, it primarily delivers compulsory courses in Modern Czech and Czechoslovak Legal History, General Legal History and Roman Law, as well as compulsory elective courses in these fields. The Research Group of Membrane Separations focuses on the development, characterization, and application of membrane-based separation processes for gaseous and liquid mixtures. The group has long-standing expertise in the separation of gas mixtures, including the purification of biogas and industrial waste gases, with particular attention to the removal of sour gases such as CO₂ and SO₂. Our research includes polymer membranes with functional modifications, such as supported ionic liquids, hierarchically porous particles, polymers of intrinsic microporosity. The group also investigates liquid separations. We apply molecular dynamics modeling to understand transport, selectivity, and molecular interactions in complex separation environments.

Possible postdoctoral project focus:

The proposed project will explore advanced functional membranes for challenging gas or liquid separations, with a focus on the relationship between membrane structure, transport properties, and separation performance. Possible research directions include CO₂, SO₂, or other harsh gases separation using functionalized particle- or liquid-based composite membranes, membrane-based processes for the separation of organic compounds or enantiomers, and machine learning-enriched molecular dynamics modeling to predict a suitable membrane for selected species. The project should, at best, combine advanced experimental techniques with modeling approaches and will offer the candidate flexibility to refine existing methodologies or introduce new concepts.

The Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of the CAS is a public research institution that specializes in chemical and environmental engineering, and materials chemistry. In addition to systematic fundamental research, the institute also engages in applied research and strives to support the next generation of scientists through training programs for Ph.D students. Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, the institute promotes technological innovations, addresses environmental and societal challenges, and encourages collaboration between academia, industry and, society.

Decentralized nature-based systems for minimization of the impact of organic micropollutants in the urban and rural areas

Research area and project description:

We offer a full-time PhD position in an interdisciplinary field encompassing environmental engineering, environmental chemistry and sciences. The successful candidate will join the research team of prof. Jan Vymazal at the Department of Applied Ecology (Wetlands Group - Faculty of Environmental Sciences Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague - ČZU) and will be supervised by Dr. Adam Sochacki.

The PhD student will be part of two projects investigating the applications of nature-based systems for the treatment of combined sewer overflows, greywater, parking runoff and sewage for minimizing the effect of the load organic micropollutants into the environment. Two of the studied sites are located on the ČZU campus, which the Pavillion of Environmental Studies and the nearby green parking lot. The main objective of the PhD student’s research will focus on understanding the quality and quantity of organic micropollutants in various types of wastewater (sewage, parking lot runoff, combined sewer overflow, greywater) and the role of nature-based systems (constructed wetlands, green walls/roofs, biofilters, permeable green parking lot) in retaining/transforming these contaminants and the effect of matrix and intrinsic properties of the systems’ performance.

Required Qualifications and specific competences

1. A master’s degree (or equivalent) in environmental engineering, environmental chemistry, environmental sciences, or a related discipline.
2. Solid background in the field of wastewater treatment (constructed wetlands, activated sludge, physical-chemical methods) and understanding of the processes governing the fate of organic micropollutants in wastewater treatment systems and in the environment.
3. Strong communication skills in English and Czech (only required for the study programme in Czech) a willingness to learn new scientific concepts, analytical skills, and field/lab techniques, and authentic interest in the research and becoming independent research; creativity in solving research problems.
4. Experience in a water and wastewater analysis, especially in solid-phase extraction procedures, HPLC/LC-MS/MS analysis, analysis of total organic carbon, ionic chromatography, and others, ability to deal with routine lab work.
5. Good skills in scientific literature review, databases, and summarizing key findings.
6. Driving licence and willingness to drive for the field work (optional).

The Institute of International Relations Prague (IIR) is an independent public research institution that conducts excellent academic research in the larger field of international relations. It is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. A full-time postdoctoral position is to be filled at the Institute of International Relations Prague (IIR), within the CLOSER project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC). This interdisciplinary project aims to explore social cleavage and party politics in the post-Ottoman space of the Middle East and North Africa.

The position is to be filled at the Institute of International Relations; to work as part of a team of political scientists (the rest of the team will be hosted at the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences). CLOSER also encompasses two other teams: historians working at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and geographers at Brussels Free University (ULB). Based at the Institute of International Relations, the successful candidate will conduct their research in the framework of the project.

Description of the position

The successful candidate will be part of the ERC CLOSER team of political scientists. During the first year in Prague, they will benefit from specific interdisciplinary training, together with the PhD students and senior researchers from the three teams on the project. During the second year, they are expected to do field research in the studied country, within an interdisciplinary team of researchers belonging to the project. During the third year in Prague, they will participate in a series of workshops to discuss their findings in relation to the project.

Theme of the research project

The candidate’s research project should cover the following theme: Peasant and environmental mobilisations in politics. The candidate will do a quantitative cross-country comparison at the scale of the six-case studies part of the CLOSER project (Türkiye, Former British Mandate for Palestine, Lebanon, Kuwait, Egypt and Tunisia). An additional focus on Lebanon would be a plus.

• The $5M investment that was expected has not materialised. The company needs to find alternative funding through grants, angel investment, and early revenue.

What You Will Do

Device Engineering & Manufacturing (First 6 Months – Highest Priority)

• Select and engage a Design for Manufacture (DFM) engineering firm to redesign both the isolation device and readout instrument for volume production.
• Manage the DFM relationship through assessment, concept design, detailed design, and prototyping.
• Redesigning and simplifying existing prototypes. Target: injection-moulded, assembly time under 5 minutes.
• Solve the readout device environmental sensitivity problem – either through on-board compensation or optical redesign.
• Qualify manufacturing partners for production at volumes of 200–10,000 units.
• Supporting other 3 independent programs.
• Supporting patents applications.

Regulatory & Quality

• Execute the QbD Scenario 1 roadmap: establish ISO 9001 QMS, achieve RUO product launch within 6 months.
• Prepare for QbD Scenario 2: transition to ISO 13485, IVDR Class A self-declaration.

Required Qualifications

Must-Have

• 5+ years of leadership experience in an IVD, medical device, or diagnostics company – ideally in an early-stage or scaling environment.
• Direct, hands-on experience taking a medical device or IVD product from prototype through CE-marking (EU MDR or IVDR) and first commercial sales.
• Understanding of Design for Manufacture processes – you must have worked with engineering firms to turn a prototype into a production-ready product.

Description

Optical fibres are the backbone of modern civilization. But what if the very cables carrying our data could also be used to eavesdrop on our voices? This PhD project investigates the Acousto-Optical effect, where acoustic waves (sound) subtly deform optical fibres, creating detectable changes in light propagation. We are looking for a driven researcher to explore these mechanisms, assess the security risks of fibre-based interception, and develop countermeasures to protect communication networks.

Selected student will have an opportunity to:

• Investigate detailed mechanisms of acousto-optical interaction in various types of optical fibres.
• Assess the real-world risks of communication interception and propose mitigation strategies.
• In collaboration with our partner institution at Brno University of Technology, utilize high-stability laser light and scattering analysis to reconstruct acoustic signals.

Research area: Wood-based composites

The departmetn has long been engaged in researching the properties of wood, wood-based materials, wood processing technologies, and the construction of wooden buildings. Its activities touch upon all areas related to the processing and utilization of wood, from traditional crafts to Industry 4.0. PhD Positions in Quantitative Imaging of Ciliary Transport

The Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) invites applications for multiple PhD positions in the newly established Laboratory of Intracellular Dynamics led by Aniruddha Mitra, PhD.

Our lab explores how molecular motors and cytoskeletal systems organize cells into functional compartments. Using C. elegans sensory neurons, we combine genetics, advanced fluorescence microscopy, and single-molecule biophysics to uncover how proteins are selectively transported into cilia—tiny cellular antennae essential for sensing and signaling.

We are recruiting PhD students for two complementary project tracks:

Track A — Single-Molecule Dissection of Ciliary Entry

This project focuses on how membrane proteins are sorted at the ciliary base and engage with intraflagellar transport (IFT) trains to enter the cilium. You will use single-molecule imaging in living neurons to track proteins from dendritic transport to ciliary entry and quantify their interactions with the IFT machinery. The goal is to reveal the physical and molecular principles that preserve ciliary identity.

You will work with state-of-the-art microscopy, genetically encoded reporters, and quantitative image analysis to study molecular dynamics in vivo.

Track B — Developing Next-Generation Imaging with Synthetic Dyes

This project centers on building new imaging technology. You will help develop methods that combine ensemble (bulk) and single-molecule measurements in the same living cell, using self-labelling tags (HaloTag/SNAP-tag) and bright synthetic fluorophores.

You will establish strategies to:

• Track individual molecules over long times with superior brightness and photostability.
• Image the same protein population simultaneously at single-molecule and ensemble levels.
• Visualize transport, entry, exit, and recycling of proteins in sensory cilia in real time.

This track sits at the intersection of optical physics, chemical biology, and cell biology, with substantial freedom for technological innovation.

The Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the newly established Laboratory of Intracellular Dynamics led by Aniruddha Mitra, PhD.

The lab investigates how cytoskeletal systems and molecular motors organize the interior of cells into functional compartments. Using C. elegans sensory neurons as a living model, we combine advanced fluorescence microscopy, single-molecule biophysics, and quantitative analysis to uncover the physical principles governing intracellular transport, protein sorting, and organelle specialization.

About the role

The postdoc will develop and apply quantitative imaging approaches to study intracellular transport and cytoskeletal organization in living organisms. The project focuses on how molecular motors, cytoskeletal tracks, and transport complexes dynamically shape the composition of sensory cilia—tiny cellular antennae essential for signaling.  You will work with state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopy (widefield/TIRF, spinning disk, lattice light-sheet), single-molecule imaging strategies, and genetically encoded reporters. The central part of the role is to transform rich imaging data into mechanistic insight using rigorous image analysis and quantitative modelling. The position offers freedom to shape your own sub-project within the lab’s core vision and to introduce new quantitative or computational approaches.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute quantitative imaging experiments in living C. elegans.
• Develop and apply advanced image-analysis pipelines (MATLAB, Python, FIJI, or similar).
• Perform single-molecule and ensemble fluorescence measurements of intracellular dynamics.
• Collaborate with experimentalists and theoretical partners to link data with models.
• Contribute to manuscript preparation, grant reporting, and mentoring of students.

Desired skills and experience

Postdoctoral Researcher in Dynamic Control of Ciliary Transport

About the role

The postdoc will establish and optimize the auxin-induced degradation (AID) system in C. elegans to enable precise temporal control over ciliary protein activity. This dynamic manipulation will be used to probe the functional roles of intraflagellar transport (IFT) components and ciliary membrane proteins, linking their single-molecule dynamics to changes in ciliary architecture and function.

The successful candidate will work at the interface of molecular biology, quantitative imaging, and biophysics, developing transgenic worm strains, integrating AID with advanced fluorescence microscopy and collaborating with theoretical biophysicists to model IFT dynamics.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and optimize the AID2 system in C. elegans to control ciliary protein levels with spatial and temporal precision
• Design and generate transgenic worm strains using CRISPR/Cas9 and MosSCI
• Use advanced fluorescence microscopy to quantitatively image ciliary protein dynamics in living C. elegans while inducing rapid changes in protein function
• Collaborate with team members and theoretician collaborators to link experimental results with quantitative modelling of IFT
• Contribute to manuscript preparation, grant reporting, and supervision of students in the lab
• Present research findings at national and international conferences
